The humane solution to pet overpopulation is right here in Pinellas County.  Stop Pet Overpopulation Together (SPOT) opened its  Spay/Neuter Clinic this past March in Pinellas Park and has done over 1,200 surgeries to date and will be doubling those numbers this fall.

Their mission is to help people keep their pets so they don’t end up in a shelter.  They provide low cost spay/neuter and education to prevent unwanted and accidental litters.  SPOT is a non profit organization and its goal is to save lives.

Pet overpopulation is the number one killer of pets in America.  Millions
of pets are turned in and euthanized every year all across the U.S.  Shelters are overflowing with peoples’ pets and the majority of them
are between 6 months and 2 years old.  This is because the pets are going through their adolescent  or teenage stage and their hormones are raging out of control.  A simple cure would be to fix your pets before they reach 4 months for cats and 6 months for dogs.  This will prevent spraying and marking of their territory, fighting, escaping to find a mate and coming home pregnant.  Cats can get pregnant as early as 4 months and dogs as early as 6 months.  75% of the pets in shelters are mixed breeds this is a direct result of pets escaping to find a mate and coming home pregnant. 

Spay/neuter is the cheapest fastest way to solve the pet overpopulation problem.  In countries where spay/neuter is done before the pets are sold, they don’t have to have shelters and pets don’t have to be euthanized.
