Everyone needs to be reminded how great Gibbs High is

I’m absolutely hurt and disgusted with some responses to Gibbs as an F school. Those who simply applaud our campus for the architecture are ignorant. Did they know one of our arts teachers Siobhan Archard, the chair of our Technical Theatre department for the arts center, drew up plans for our school during re-construction? Behind those gleaming new walls, are students that shine 10 times brighter.

Gibbs is recognized in two lights. A sad facade seen by the county. We either are recognized for P.C.C.A.,  the Pinellas County Center for the Arts, a school for extremely talented students known for remarkable works or as the high the school “in the hood.”

WAKE UP PEOPLE! Gibbs High is a melting pot of diversity. We represent society in itself. We have dancers writers, musicians, rappers, artists, designers, future business persons, a dedicated and award-winning R.O.T.C. department, and a school for business and technology. We may not have that shimmering”A” above our doors, but when you step off of 34th street and step foot on our grounds at Gibbs high you’re in a new setting.

Our Gladiator represents the strength and passion that is Gibbs High School. As a student, I can say Gibbs has what no other school in the county does, we’re truly united. North County schools buzz with cliques, students are alienated by their own peers. But Gibbs is a body of one; we divide into our departments and meld with student of various interests. We are unique.

The local color of St. Petersburg gives character to our student body and our campus. If you plant a seed and fail to put it in sunlight, it won’t flourish. You can water it all you like, sometimes it absorbs, and sometimes it ruins all the potential that single seed holds. Gibbs has absorbed the principles needed to build a better foundation as a school. I hope our new principal will let us shine, and grow as a unified body. Gibbs needs to be reminded of how great we are. More pep rallies, and spirit to motivate us to be better, in combination with increased educational tools, we're sure to be golden...and blue of course.

Our staff motivates us to shoot for the moon; even if we miss we shall land among the stars. Recent graduates have been accepted to top of the nation's schools. From theater alliances to air force academies. It’s funny, if we’re an “F” school, then how are we producing such amazing noted students? Wait until we're a “B” school...B, as in BIG-TEN.

At the end of the year, I have faith we can meet the new standards and rise. Here’s to 12 months, lets get to work!

I haven’t spent the last 3 years reporting to the bus stop from my home in Tarpon Springs at 4:45 a.m.  if I didn’t think it was worth it. I may be a student for the Pinellas County Center for the Arts, but I also am a Gladiator as well.

Gibbs Deserving of F

Amanda,

For you, Gibbs may be a wonderful school, but you are enrolled in the PCCA. As a past student for only one year before transferring to another school, I can say that at my time at Gibbs as a young, white girl just as you are, I was scared and intimidated on a daily basis.

I also disagree with the comment about the school being united. I believe there are cliques at your school, or at least there were when I attended. The PCCA students kept to themselves, as did the ROTC children.

During my one-year stay at Gibbs, we were sent onto the football field at least three times for a bomb threat.

I was not surprised at all to hear of Gibbs' F rating.

WELL AL, I WRITE HORROR STORIES.

PROFESSIONAL CHARACTER ASSASSIN.

Amanda you wont learn anything worth knowing at a Pinellas County high school. You must struggle on your own to identify and master the essential knowledge that matters. If your mind is receptive the teacher will come.

Mayor, If Ypur Horror Stories Are As Short As Your----

Mayor, If your horror stories are as short as your posts, you sure in hell are not scaring too many people. I believe it was Shakespeare who wrote, "Since Brevity is the soul of wit, And tediousness the limbs of outward flourishes, I will be brief" Mayor, you sure in hell do not write the best posts but you sure do write the shortest ones. God bless.

Being a New Yorker, I Know Very Little About Gibbs Or, For That-

Being a New Yorker, I know very little about Gibbs, or for that matter, about any high school in our area. I do know one thing. I know a good writer when I read one. You wrote a beautiful letter. It is a very intelligent letter. If all students in your school are as bright as you seem to be, Gibbs certainly should not be a "F" school. I especially like the line "Our staff motivates us to shoot for the moon; even if we miss it we will land among the stars". Happy landing, Amanda, and God bless.

Amanda

Your letter was outstanding in the defense of Gibbs and your dedication to it is beyond reproach. However Gibbs is not a center for performing arts, it is a high school in which its primary function is to teach attending students the basics of a complete education in preparing them for college and future endeavors should they choose not to attend college.

Are you basing this F rating on just performing arts or the school in general?

TALK IS CHEAP.

PROFESSIONAL CHARACTER ASSASSIN.

Mo homework and mo gwine to school oughta help, too.

Mayor, Henny Youngman, the Comedian, Was King of the One--------

Mayor, Henny Youngman, the comedian, was
king of the one-liners. I saw him first about
65 years at the N. Y. Paramount. Henny was
a lousy violin player. He would come out and
say a few one liners such as "Take my wife---
PLEASE!!!Then he would look down in the pit
at a real good violinist in the orchestra and he
would play a horribe bad notes on his violin and
say to the professional violinist, "Pack up. You're
through!" Mayor, you seem to be king of the one
liners in this forum. If you are feeling charitable,
you give us two or three short lines. Amanda
is a junior at Gibbs High School. Is "Talk is
cheap" the best advice you can give to a l7
year older? I believe Amanda is very bright and
will do very well in life. She wrote a damn good
letter and it was a little MORE THAN YOUR USUAL
TWO LINES. God bless.
