I have worked in the school system since 2006. I worked as a District Floater for the Orange County Public School (OCPS) system before working for the School Department of Hillsborough County (SDHC). Thus, I have visited more than 180 schools. I constantly see the same problems:
1. The students do not even sit down at lunch time to eat. It is a chaotic, social hour with mishaps just waiting to happen. Schools keep adults posted in the cafeteria in case of violent disruptions. But it is very hard for the adults to get the situation under control when they must maneuver around 50 or more students just to get close to the fight. By this time, a student has been beaten pretty badly and thoroughly embarrassed.
2. The Parent Teachers Association (PTA) wanted their students to be able to make a choice of their food selections in the cafeteria. The lunchroom staff does not pass a tray of nutritious selections. Rather, the staff keeps a constant supply of whatever foods are in demand, usually cookies, chips, soda, and french fries. As a former Food and Nutrition Services employee, I have seen the majority of schools cook enough vegetables to feed just one grade, and still have several portions left over daily.
3. Students return to class with a sugar high, cell phones, i-Pods, and a bad attitude. The assumption is that teachers and faculty have not set rules in place against disruptions. It isn't true! When asked to turn in electronic devices, these students are ready to fight. The office calls parents, who either don't discipline or may even pick a fight with the school for contacting them.
And through all of this, teachers and school staff are expected to teach, bring FCAT scores up, and discipline without parental cooperation. It is nothing like the educational environment of former generations. Please take these observations into consideration when reporting how students fare on the FCAT.

I Am STILL Convinced
I am STILL convinced the FCAT is a way to manipulate the educational system in Florida into making sure the state legislature controls what is taught in schools, how much emphasis is placed on particular educational tidbits and how to eliminate over time certain subjects, certain knowledge within a subject. For every hour that is spent in "training" to answer FCAT questions, that is an hour that cannot be used to teach other subjects.
Civics, American History, Governmental workings are some of the subjects that are NOT taught in schools these days because preparing for FCAT takes up too much time. How many schools in Florida teach basic "home economics" (how to boil water, bake a cake, sewing repair, washing clothing) and various shops such as woodworking, metal working and the like to give basic skills in the use of tools.
Seems to me that half of the education I received is NOT being given to students today because SOME STATE GOVERNMENT BUREAUCRAT DECIDES what is important in the study for FCAT. Parents really NEED TO READ the content of the FCAT tests to see the validity of what is being taught "AS IMPORTANT" for completing education through FCAT.

FCAT Reason for Failure
Perhaps the FCAT is also the reason a large percentage of Florida's public school kids struggle and/or fail when they try to go to an out of state college. They aren't remotely prepared for the subjects, even the "weed out" subjects being taught there.
Not only are they not being taught the full gambit of subjects, but they aren't allowed to be taught discipline or respect. These kids are running rampant not only because they are probably bored out of their minds, but because no one, starting with the parents, has taught them respect. Public schools around here have become, largely a social hour or extended day care.
I can safely say that my child will NOT be attending public school here in Florida. Yeah, I have to work extra hours and such to pay for it, but it's a small price to have him actually learn something and be prepared to face the world after he leaves for college.

Allan,Merlin, Mayor and I and others such as
Jack, Kay, etc. can be proud that we helped build
up this forum and many of us, if not all of us,
NEVER TOOK A FCAT TEST. We all became
successful without the damn tests. God bless.
Lol yes sir
Nope, no fcat in my time as a student. We took some kind of assessment tests that compared us to other kids in Florida as well as across the nation. I always kind of liked seeing how I compared to other the other students.
