Readers Exchange: Hillsborough family needs a crib

OASIS Network of Tampa Bay, a nonprofit organization that distributes donations of children's personal items to Hillsborough County's most needy public school children, is in need of a crib or playpen for a family.

The organization is trying to help a family with a 5-month-old baby who has been sleeping in a car seat since birth.

If you would like to donate, please call 813-975-8179. OASIS will find a way to pick up the crib if you are unable to deliver it to their office.

This is a very odd request

If the baby has been sleeping in a car for 5 months, just where will the playpin or crib go? Does the baby have a home and if so, then why is it sleeping in a car. Please give more detais.

missing something

Jack, I think you missed something.  The baby is sleeping in one of those "infant carrier" car seats, not actually in a car.

Being that the baby is only a few months away from growing out of a crib, they would be better off with a toddler bed or even a full size bed (with side rails).

My son has been in a grown up queen size bed since he was younger than two.  It is off the frame (sitting directly on the floor) for his safety.  It is clear to me that he is more comfortable in that than what he was in his crib or his toddler bed.

The baby is probably perfectly comfortable in the car seat but I would suggest making up a pad of blankets on the floor - maybe next to mom's side of her bed - just so the baby can stretch out a bit more.
